KAMPALA – Democratic Party (DP) has denied accusations that their presidential candidate has taken over a married woman. While the presidential candidate, Norbert Mao, on Saturday declined to discuss the matter, other party officials said the woman in question, Beatrice Kayanja, is working as the candidate’s research assistant. In a recorded message that has gone viral, a man who identified as Martin Kayanja from London, claimed that he is the husband of Beatrice Kayanja. The man faulted Mao for taking over his wife and creating the impression that he is her husband by moving with her on the campaign trail. Mao was the subject of intense debate on social media after the recording surfaced. Kayanja urged Mao to give space to his wife and find other women in DP to move with. But when contacted over the weekend, Mao briefly stated: “I have no comment. The person they are talking about is a member of the party.” “Most of you know my wife Kayanja, who was contesting for the position of Kampala lord mayor.
The problem I have is that Mao is stuck with my wife. Wherever he goes, he wants to move with my wife and giving the impression that my wife is his,” Kayanja said in the recording. He said this is undermining their marriage before his parents, friends and that he had been receiving calls from friends asking him what has gone wrong between them. “Mao, I beg you, please leave my wife alone,” Kayanja added. He said his wife had come back to Uganda in March this year to carry out some work, but was held up by the COVID-19 lockdown. Fred Mwesigwa, Mao’s publicity secretary, in an interview with New Vision described Beatrice Kayanja as a passionate DP member, whose availability on the DP candidate’s campaign team is based on her research assistant role for Mao. Mwesigwa said in the process of carrying on her duties as a research assistant, she oftentimes has supported Mao on the campaign trail. Kayanja attempted to vie for the Kampala city mayorship on DP ticket, but could not be nominated because she was not a registered voter. She had earlier said she would contest as an independent candidate.Mwesigwa said Kayanja is a passionate DP member, whose availability on the DP candidate’s campaign team is based on her role as Mao’s research assistant.
