Africa-Press – Uganda. KCB-Nkumba Volleyball Club made a strong return to competitive action with a 3–1 triumph over Kampala University in the finals of the Nkumba University Open Championship,.
The victory marks the team’s first outing since their mid-season break in June and comes at a pivotal moment as they build momentum ahead of the prestigious NSSF KAVC International Tournament scheduled for September.
The final began with Kampala University taking the opening set 25–23, taking advantage of KCB-Nkumba’s slow start. However, KCB-Nkumba quickly found their rhythm and dominated the next three sets 25–12, 25–17, and 25–12, showcasing superior attack, precise serving, and composure under pressure.
The turnaround highlighted the squad’s depth and resilience. Players regrouped after the initial setback and asserted control, leaving Kampala University unable to match their pace and consistency.
Standout performers Jennifer Alungat and Katreena Odermaat led the charge, embodying the fighting spirit that carried the team to victory, supported by the collective effort and discipline of the squad.
Head Coach Tonny Peter Lakony Tonny praised the team’s resilience while emphasizing that the win is just the beginning.
“This victory is important because it’s our first competition after the break. The players aren’t yet at full fitness, but they showed heart and character. It gives us a strong platform to build on for the international stage,” he said.
Sheila Awori, the acting Head of Marketing and Communications at KCB Bank Uganda, lauded the team’s performance, noting:
“We are proud of KCB-Nkumba for their outstanding display. Their discipline, determination, and teamwork reflect the values we uphold. Victories like this inspire not only the players but also the communities that support them. We are committed to nurturing talent that uplifts and unites people through sport.”
Looking ahead, the NSSF KAVC International Tournament in September will be the next major test for the team.
After missing last year’s competition, KCB-Nkumba’s return is highly anticipated. Their Nkumba Open triumph provides both confidence and valuable match practice as they aim to challenge for regional honours.
The Nkumba University Open Championship continues to be a premier platform for showcasing local volleyball talent. For KCB-Nkumba, this victory signals their readiness to reclaim dominance and reaffirm their reputation as a disciplined and competitive team both on and off the court.
