Kyambogo University sets timeline for reopening

Africa-PressUganda. Kyambogo University which has been closed like all other academic institutions plans to have its gates fully open for all students on February 1.

The University Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka, however, says the university plans to start with online classes on January 18 before the planned full opening, all subject to government clearance.

The government on October 15 partially reopened candidate classes and finalists in universities, after six months of the education institutions’ closure. The institutions had been closed at the end of March this year by Government; to stem the spread of COVID-19 before it spread into communities.

The state minister for higher education Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo says it is okay for universities to set their own dates, but “Their full re-opening will only be cleared by the government. All these dates they are setting are for planning purposes, but not conclusive.”

Katunguka concurs with the minister, that indeed, these are planning dates, subject to approval by the Government.

“If the government re-opens institutions of learning for continuing students, we shall go by the outlined roadmap. We hope that by this time, they will have cleared all institutions to re-open. If this is not the case, we will reschedule our opening,” he explained
