Kyomugisha Eyes Equity-Naro Golf Open Victory

Africa-Press – Uganda. Fresh from her victory at the Kinyara Golf Open in Masindi from November 13–15, Meron Kyomugisha is setting her sights on repeating the performance at the Equity NARO Golf Open this weekend at the Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Club in Namulonge.

Kyomugisha, who won the same tournament in 2022, said she has been working hard to sharpen her skills.

“This is the tournament that wraps up the year. 2025 has been good to me, and I have put in a lot of work—strengthened my short game by working on chipping and putting, improved on course management by strategically playing the course. So I’m sure I can bring this home,” Kyomugisha told this newspaper.

The tournament, now in its fifth year, has attracted over 120 golfers. It will be played under the theme, “Swinging to 17 Years of Equity Bank Growth,” celebrating 17 years of the bank’s success, impact, and partnerships in Uganda’s financial sector.

The Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Club, located within the country’s largest agricultural research centre (NARO), has earned a reputation as a breeding ground for emerging golf talent.

The 9-hole, par-70 course provides an ideal environment for training and skill development.

“This year’s tournament is not just another edition; it carries a deep and meaningful milestone. Equity Bank is celebrating 17 years of serving the people of Uganda—seventeen years of growth, partnership, innovation, and shared prosperity,” said Claver Serumaga, Executive Director of Equity Bank.

“Seventeen years of walking hand in hand with individuals, families, and businesses to transform lives and livelihoods>’

This year introduces new twists, with Gross players competing alongside men. They will start on Thursday with 36 holes and complete the final 18 on Friday to make it a 54-hole tournament.

Subsidiaries and Seniors will compete for trophies and a total of Shs5 million, while professionals will compete for a prize of Shs 10 million.

The highlight of the tournament will be the specially branded 17th hole, featuring giveaways for players in line with the bank’s anniversary celebrations.

Timothy Lwanga, Club Captain, expressed excitement about the event.

“This is historical for us because Namulonge is celebrating 75 years, and for the club, it shows how far working with the right partners goes in developing sports in the country. Equity has supported us through this journey, and we have set in motion plans for having a fully fledged clubhouse in the near future,” he said.

By press time, professional golfers from Zimbabwe and Kenya had confirmed their participation in the tournament.
