Africa-Press – Uganda. Liberty General Insurance Uganda Limited, in partnership with Stanbic Bank Uganda’s Bancassurance Agency and SafeCar by SafeBoda, unveiled Protecta Bode, a new car insurance product designed to bridge the gap between statutory third-party insurance and comprehensive motor coverage.

According to the Insurance Regulatory Authority’s 2020 report, 86% of car owners in Uganda opt for third-party insurance, leaving a significant coverage gap.

Protecta Bode aims to address this by offering protection for the vehicle’s external body against accidental damage, including repairs, panel beating, and parts replacement at Liberty-approved garages.

The cover also includes third-party liability for bodily injury, death, or property damage, and medical or life benefits for the driver following an accident. Premiums are set at 1.5% of the vehicle’s market value.

Raphael Bisaso, Head of Marketing and Distribution at Liberty General Insurance Uganda, explained, “Protecta Bode provides broader coverage than statutory third-party insurance while remaining affordable.

It focuses on the real needs of most motorists—protection for vehicle bodies and third-party liabilities—without the high cost often associated with comprehensive insurance.”

The product name combines cultural resonance and clarity: “Protecta” evokes protection, while “Bode,” derived from the Luganda word for “body,” emphasizes coverage for the vehicle’s physical structure.

Initially, Protecta Bode will roll out to SafeCar’s 6,000 drivers, with plans to expand as a standalone product. It also has the potential to tap into SafeBoda’s 9,000 boda riders, encouraging some to transition from riding to driving SafeCars.

Peter Makhanu, Managing Director of Liberty General Insurance Uganda, said, “By focusing on car body coverage through Protecta Bode, we’re making insurance relatable and attainable. Starting with SafeBoda’s trusted network allows us to deliver real value to drivers on the road.”

Samuel Mwogeza, Executive Director and Head of Personal & Private Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda, added, “This partnership bridges banking and insurance for seamless access. Protecta Bode is more than coverage—it’s a step toward economic resilience for drivers facing daily risks.”

Christian Wamambe, country director of SafeBoda Uganda, emphasized the safety and community impact: “Protecta Bode aligns with our mission to promote driver wellbeing and road safety. Through this collaboration, we are empowering over 15,000 drivers and cyclists while supporting training and infrastructure improvements for safer roads.”

As part of the launch, the partners announced a CSR campaign promoting road safety, including driver training at SafeBoda’s Academy, installation of zebra crossings at 10 Kampala locations, and additional signage ahead of the festive season.

This collaboration builds on a 2023 initiative—SafeRide—which offered microinsurance for boda riders and earned the “Most Innovative Bancassurance Agent 2023” award.

With Protecta Bode, Liberty, Stanbic, and SafeBoda aim to continue their legacy of innovation and enhanced protection for Uganda’s drivers.
