Africa-Press – Uganda. Saint Mary’s Cathedral Lubaga, commonly known as Lubaga Cathedral, the historic seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda, held a high-level fundraising dinner on Thursday evening at the Pope Paul VI Memorial Hotel, ahead of its centenary celebrations scheduled for October 2025.
The dinner drew a cross-section of distinguished guests, including representatives from the Buganda Kingdom, Catholic clergy led by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, senior government officials, corporate executives, and members of the media.
Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, attended the event as a sign of the Kingdom’s support for the cathedral’s milestone.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the organizing committee, Owek. John Frederick Kiyimba Freeman announced a wave of high-profile contributions, beginning with a Shs300 million donation from President Yoweri Museveni.
“Next Media CEO Kin Kariisa has confirmed NBS TV will provide full media coverage of the centenary and has personally contributed Shs300 million toward the preparations,” Kiyimba said.
He added that Kansai Plascon had offered to repaint the cathedral as part of its corporate social responsibility, while Archbishop Ssemogerere would lead a series of special masses at institutions including Parliament, Bank of Uganda, and Centenary Bank to support ongoing fundraising efforts.
Lubaga Cathedral has served as a spiritual, cultural, and historical beacon since its completion in 1925, making it one of Uganda’s most treasured religious monuments.
The October celebrations are expected to draw thousands of local and international pilgrims and will feature religious services, cultural showcases, and community outreach events.
Organisers say the cathedral’s centenary is not just a Catholic affair but a national moment of reflection on faith, resilience, and unity.
