Minister Nambozo Quits Subcounty NRM Race, Targets District Chairmanship in Showdown with Lumolo

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs, Florence Nambozo, has announced her withdrawal from the NRM General Secretary race for Mutufu Subcounty, setting eyes on the position of NRM District Chairperson.

Nambozo made the surprise declaration during a radio appearance on Monday evening ahead of the re-scheduled poll today.

The initial vote held over the weekend was marred by claims of vote tampering and intimidation, prompting the NRM to defer the poll.

“I will not participate in a fraudulent process engineered to suppress the voice of the people,” said Nambozo, directly accusing the incumbent District NRM Chairperson, Hajji Sulaiman Lumolo Mafabi, of manipulating the process. She claimed that outsiders were ferried into the Subcounty to sway the vote in what she termed a calculated ploy to undermine her support.

“Many of my supporters were intimidated and blocked from participating. This is not just about one seat it’s about protecting democracy within our party,” she said. “I am now answering a bigger call to restore dignity and transparency at the district level.”

Her announcement sets the stage for a highly anticipated face-off with Hajji Lumolo, a veteran party mobiliser who has held the district chairmanship for years.

Observers say Nambozo’s shift to contest for the district chair signals a broader wave of internal pressure for change within the ruling party.

As tensions simmer, the party leadership will have to tread carefully to avoid deeper fractures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
