Africa-Press – Uganda. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, has met with officials from the Mines Department in a high-level strategy session aimed at addressing persistent challenges in Uganda’s mineral licensing system and improving governance in the sector.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters, focused on removing bottlenecks in the licensing approval process, enhancing staff capacity, and aligning operations with the government’s goal of building an efficient, transparent, and investor-attractive mining framework.
“Transparency, accountability, and efficiency remain our top priorities as we strengthen Uganda’s mineral governance,” said Minister Nankabirwa.
“This meeting is a key step toward streamlining our licensing system and unlocking the country’s vast mining potential.”
She emphasized the need for a more responsive mineral licensing process that supports sustainable development while attracting credible investment to the sector.
The Minister noted that reforms to the mineral licensing process would not only improve service delivery but also boost investor confidence and drive economic growth through responsible exploitation of Uganda’s natural resources.
Officials from the Mines Department echoed the Minister’s concerns and committed to fast-tracking internal reforms, including digitalizing key systems and upskilling technical staff.
The meeting forms part of a broader push by the government to enhance mineral sector governance and operationalize the 2022 Mining and Minerals Act, which aims to position Uganda as a competitive player in regional and global mining markets.
