Mityana Returning Officer Urges Discipline during Nominations

Africa-Press – Uganda. The nomination exercise for candidates in Mityana District has kicked off smoothly, with only a few challenges reported, according to the District Returning Officer, Charles Rebero.

Rebero stressed that maintaining law and order during nominations is crucial for a credible process. He cautioned aspirants against mobilising large crowds to escort them to nomination centers or organising celebrations after clearance, saying such actions are unlawful and risk disrupting the exercise.

“Nominations are a formal process, not a campaign rally,we are reminding candidates that bringing crowds to the centers or staging processions after clearance is against the law and could jeopardise the smooth running of the exercise.”Rebero noted.

The Returning Officer further reminded aspirants that the Electoral Commission (EC) will officially announce the commencement of campaigns at a later stage. He urged candidates to exercise patience and avoid premature campaign activities.

“The Commission will communicate when campaigns are officially allowed. Until then, all aspirants must respect the guidelines and wait for the announcement,” Rebero emphasised.

Rebero appealed to both candidates and their supporters to prioritise discipline and cooperation, noting that any violation of the rules could attract penalties.

“Our focus is to ensure a peaceful and lawful electoral process. If everyone follows the guidelines, we can have nominations and campaigns that reflect fairness and order,” he added.

The nomination exercise is part of the nationwide preparations for the 2026 general elections, with Mityana District expected to be one of the hotly contested battlegrounds in the Buganda region.
