Africa-Press – Uganda. The playgrounds of Agora Primary School in Soroti City West Division erupted with excitement on Saturday as thousands gathered for the launch of the MP Joan Alobo Female Football Tournament.
The atmosphere was electric, fuelled by high-energy performances from popular musicians Josh Rash and John Francis Angiro, who kept the crowd on its feet with vibrant songs and dances.
The event was graced by Soroti City West Division Member of Parliament Jonathan Ebwalu, who joined MP Alobo and local councilors in a show of unity and support for women’s sports.
In a bold and crowd-thrilling move, Alobo arrived at the event riding a motorcycle, leading a colourful boda boda convoy.
Her dramatic entrance sent the crowd into a frenzy and cemented her image as a daring and relatable leader.
The “Alobo Cup” officially kicked off with 24 teams confirming their participation from wards across Soroti City East and West Divisions.
The tournament is set to offer a vital platform for women to showcase their football talents and promote community cohesion.
Speaking at the launch, Alobo underlined the tournament’s deeper significance.
“Women have for long been sidelined in sports activities,” she said.
“Through this tournament, we want to inspire more women to actively participate in sports and leadership.”
The excitement is set to continue on Sunday, with Soroti City East Division hosting its own tournament launch at Kichinjaji Primary School pitch, promising another day of spirited competition and community celebration.
MP Alobo’s initiative comes as her political career gains increasing momentum.
Many residents praised her for her fearless leadership and deep connection with grassroots issues.
“This is a leader who moves with the people, listens to them, and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty for a cause she believes in,” said Sarah Akullo, a resident of Soroti City West Division.
“Seeing her ride a motorcycle into the event today was a true sign that she is one of us.”
As the tournament unfolds, the community eagerly awaits the thrilling matches ahead.
Beyond the competition, the Alobo Cup stands as a powerful testament to the growing movement for women’s inclusion in all spheres of society — a cause MP Alobo Joan continues to champion with energy and passion.
The electrifying event at Agora Primary School has set the tone for an exciting series of matches, celebrations, and empowerment activities that will sweep across Soroti City in the coming weeks.
