Africa-Press – Uganda. Mubende Municipality has been awarded Best Overall in institutional performance and infrastructure delivery over the past five years of the USMID program (2019–2024).
The awarding ceremony was held at Speke Resort in Munyonyo by officials from the World Bank.
According to Edward Sanyu Kyazze, Chairperson of the Mubende Municipality Development Forum, Mubende has consistently been among the top-performing municipalities during every World Bank supervision visit.
“We have managed to win the award for Best Overall Performing Municipality among cities and municipalities funded by the World Bank. Over the past five years, we have ranked number one several times and only came second once. Today’s award reflects the effective leadership in Mubende Municipality,” said Kyazze.
He further revealed that the government has launched a new project named USIMID, and Mubende is among the prioritised beneficiaries.
“The good news is that the government has now launched the USIMID program, and Mubende Municipality is going to benefit from it,” he said.
“As Mubende Municipality, we are planning to tarmac several roads, including Kirungi–Kangulumira in South Division, Nazareth–Barracks, Station Road, Nkanaga Road, and also construct a new football playground, as the one at Kassana is being removed. We also plan to build a proper abattoir, improve drainage systems, and undertake many other projects,” Kyazze added.
He thanked the municipal leadership and technocrats for their cooperation, which has contributed to the success of Mubende Municipality.
“I cannot forget to thank His Worship the Mayor and the technocrats led by the Town Clerk for the great work done. The World Bank assesses everything during these projects,” he said.
According to Innocent Ssekiziivu, the Municipality Mayor, Mubende has so far implemented several projects under USMID worth Shs 63 billion. These include roads, drainage systems, streetlights, a market, and a sports center.
Mubende was elevated to municipality status on July 1, 2015, and consists of three divisions: East Division, South Division, and West Division.
