Africa-Press – Uganda. The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Monica Musenero, has lauded Psalms Food Industries (SUMZ) for launching a state-of-the-art water treatment facility at its premises in Nkoowe, Wakiso District.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Sunday, Dr Musenero described the company’s 16-year operational history as a testament to resilience, innovation and responsible industrial expansion within Uganda’s growing manufacturing sector.

The newly inaugurated plant is designed to treat industrial wastewater to safe standards while recycling part of it for internal reuse in factory operations.

According to the minister, the facility reflects a deliberate shift towards environmentally responsible manufacturing and compliance with national and international sustainability standards.

“Psalms Food Industries stands as a beacon of what Ugandan entrepreneurship can achieve when driven by vision and a commitment to sustainability,” Dr Musenero said.

“For sixteen years, this company has not only sustained its operations but has flourished, showcasing resilience, a pioneering spirit and a responsible approach to industrial development. This advanced water treatment facility is a clear demonstration of their foresight and dedication to protecting our natural resources.”

She said the investment aligns with government efforts to promote science, technology and innovation as drivers of industrialisation, while ensuring environmental stewardship remains central to economic growth.

Beyond its environmental impact, the minister highlighted the company’s contribution to employment, particularly among young people.

Psalms Food Industries currently employs more than 500 young Ugandans, a figure she said underscores its role in addressing unemployment and strengthening household incomes.

“It is heartening to see a locally owned enterprise not only achieving commercial success but also making a tangible difference in the lives of our young people,” she added.

Dennis Ngabirano, Managing Director of Psalms Food Industries, said the facility goes beyond conventional wastewater treatment by integrating a comprehensive water management system.

“Our new facility is more than just a wastewater treatment plant; it is a complete water management system,” Ngabirano said.

“We are embracing a circular economy model by transforming waste into a resource. This reduces our environmental footprint while improving operational efficiency.”

He explained that treated water meets strict quality and safety standards before being reused in production processes, ensuring that sustainability measures do not compromise manufacturing quality.

Ngabirano also revealed that by-products from the treatment process are being converted into fertilisers and other useful materials, contributing to agricultural productivity and reinforcing a broader sustainable resource management framework.

In recognition of the company’s performance, Dr Musenero pledged to advocate for Psalms Food Industries to be designated a national centre of excellence for entrepreneurs, saying its model offers lessons for other Ugandan businesses.

“This is the kind of homegrown success story that inspires a nation,” she said, adding that innovation-driven enterprises would play a central role in propelling Uganda’s industrial transformation.
