Museveni, EU Delegation Discuss Regional Security Amid South Sudan Tensions

Africa-Press – Uganda. President Yoweri Museveni has met with a delegation from the European Union Mission in Uganda, led by Ambassador Jan Sadek, to discuss regional security, with a particular focus on the escalating situation in South Sudan.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Museveni said the meeting addressed “a number of issues concerning security in the region and South Sudan.”

He welcomed the EU delegation and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Uganda and the European Union in promoting peace and stability across the Great Lakes region.

The discussions come at a critical time as South Sudan faces renewed tensions that threaten its fragile peace process.

Earlier this month, African Union mediators arrived in Juba to facilitate dialogue aimed at preventing a resurgence of conflict following the house arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar.

President Salva Kiir has accused Machar of inciting rebellion, triggering clashes reminiscent of the country’s devastating 2013–2018 civil war.

Further complicating the situation, the United States recently revoked visas held by South Sudanese nationals, citing the government’s failure to accept repatriated citizens.

The move has heightened diplomatic tensions and raised concerns about its potential impact on South Sudan’s stability.

The European Union remains actively engaged in peacebuilding and governance efforts in South Sudan.

The meeting between President Museveni and Ambassador Sadek highlights the EU’s commitment to working with regional leaders to address security challenges and support sustainable peace in South Sudan and the wider region.
