Africa-Press – Uganda. President Museveni on Tuesday returned to Kyankwanzi, a key battleground of the bush war, as he canvassed for support ahead of the 2026 elections.
Speaking at Butemba College School playgrounds amid heavy rain, Museveni thanked NRM supporters for turning up in large numbers.
“I thank the people of Kyankwanzi for showing that you are grandchildren of fighters. It rained heavily, but you still came in big numbers,” he said.
Museveni said the NRM’s first major contribution after coming to power was peace, which he described as the foundation for all development in the area.
“As people of Luweero know, Uganda went through wars from 1966 to 1986. Today, it is 40 years of peace. A whole lineage has grown up without ever seeing war,” he said.
He added that while neighbouring countries have experienced prolonged conflict, Uganda has remained peaceful due to the NRM’s politics of interests rather than identity, which helped build strong institutions such as the army, police and prisons.
Museveni also cited the NRM’s record in promoting inclusive politics, particularly women’s representation in Parliament.
“In 1962 there were only two women MPs. Today, many women sit in Parliament. That is the work of the NRM,” he said.
He urged residents to audit what the NRM has delivered in Kyankwanzi over the last four decades, citing major road projects, including the extension of tarmac from Busunju to Kiboga, Kafu and Hoima, as well as ongoing repairs to the Kampala–Mubende–Kyankwanzi road.
Museveni said electricity coverage has expanded, with only three out of 21 sub-counties still without power, while access to safe water stands at 84 percent, with plans to reach full coverage.
He also pledged upgrades to health facilities and encouraged residents to embrace irrigation while protecting wetlands.
Despite government investment in infrastructure, Museveni stressed that wealth creation remains crucial.
“Development benefits everyone, but wealth benefits you as an individual,” he said, citing a dairy farmer from Ngoma who earns over Shs20 million monthly despite limited infrastructure.
Museveni urged Ugandans to take advantage of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga to improve their livelihoods.
“NRM has moved Uganda from where it was to where it is now. Support the NRM so we continue on this path,” he said.
