The project is part of the international trunk route connecting Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Eastern Congo to the Port of Mombasa in Kenya. The proposed Busega – Mpigi Expressway (23.7km) is located within the central region of Uganda. The Project area is located on the Northern Multimodal Corridor and it is expected to facilitate the logistics within the great Kampala metropolitan area and also improve the traffic flow on the Northern Corridor. The Project starts at Busega (at the Kampala Entebbe Expressway approximately 12.5kms from Kampala City Center) and moves in a south-westerly direction following predominantly a greenfield to the northern side of the existing Kampala – Masaka Road up to Mpigi town. (Approximately 40km southwest of Kampala).According to Uganda National Roads Authority, The Busega—Mpigi Expressway project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion within Kampala City where most roads from upcountry end with estimates pointing to over 70% of Uganda’s motor vehicles congested within Kampala and surrounding areas. The four-lane, dual carriage expressway will stretch from Busega in Kampala to Kalagala Village, Mpigi Town Council.A consortium of Chinese companies, including China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), and China Railway 19th Bureau Group Company Limited, won the contract to construct the road. The project is expected to last 30 months and will go through 21 villages spread in two town councils (Kyengera and Mpigi) and two sub-counties of Kiringete and Wakiso.
