Muyingo Urges Bamunanika NRM Unity for 2026

Africa-Press – Uganda. The State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, has called on National Resistance Movement (NRM) members in Bamunanika Constituency to actively participate in the upcoming NRM primaries and the 2026 general elections, urging them to elect leaders who will prioritise their interests.

Speaking during an engagement with newly elected NRM structure members in Bamunanika, Dr. Muyingo emphasised the need for unity within the party to restore its dominance in the Greater Luweero region, where President Museveni suffered significant losses in the 2021 elections.

“It’s important for everyone to participate in the elections process so that you have a good leader who will show you your responsibility and lobby for your good,” Muyingo said.

Dr. Muyingo, who once represented Bamunanika Constituency in Parliament but lost the seat in 2021, surprised many when he expressed interest in reclaiming it for a third term but later declined to pick nomination forms. He announced that he will instead support whoever emerges as the NRM flag bearer in next week’s primaries, scheduled for Thursday, July 17.

“My focus now is on popularising President Museveni in the Central Region, starting from Greater Luweero, especially Luweero where I come from,” he said. “I do not want to see President Museveni humiliated again with few votes like last time when he got only 41,166 votes (27.94%) and lost all the big positions, including the four MP seats and the District Chairperson position. This must change in 2026.”

Muyingo stressed that unity among party members is crucial if they are to reverse the poor performance.

“We cannot achieve this when party members are divided. I urge you to join hands and lay strategies that will raise the love for Museveni and the NRM and bring the party back on top like it was in the past years,” he added.

He also warned members against practices like the embezzlement of party funds meant for election activities, saying, “You should be examples to the rest of the people.”

Stephen Ssebidde, the Bamunanika Sub County Chairperson, echoed Muyingo’s sentiments, appealing to top party leaders to resolve internal disputes that have weakened the party’s strength.

“Everyone is eyeing a position instead of helping themselves to bring back Luweero,” Ssebidde said.

Meanwhile, Wasswa AbdulKarim Tamale, another NRM member, urged party members to be more proactive and stop attending meetings only when there are transport refunds.

“The issue of party members thinking that some people are earning in party activities while others are left behind has affected the party. Members, this is service no one is paid,” he said.

Wasswa also cautioned leaders to avoid spreading misinformation.

“NRM leaders, regardless of your position, please avoid saying things you are not sure of so you do not mislead the local community. Show people what the government has done,” he urged. “The youth have been misled. There is a lot to do to bring them back to the NRM.”

The engagement comes as the party gears up for its primaries next week, which are expected to set the tone for the NRM’s strategy in the 2026 general elections.
