Nabweru Sub-County Launches Cultural Heritage Competitions

Africa-Press – Uganda. The leadership of Nabweru Sub-County (Mituba II) in Kyaddondo County has organized cultural heritage competitions among primary school children, aimed at promoting traditional values, environmental conservation, and innovation among the youth.

The event, held at Bat Valley Theatre in Kampala, was titled “Tourism Prince and Princess Primary Schools Pageant.” It attracted participation from several primary schools within the sub-county, all competing under the main theme of

“Protecting the Environment Through Preserving Culture.” Contestants showcased talent, creativity, and a deep understanding of cultural heritage while emphasising the importance of safeguarding nature.

In his address, the Minister for Culture and Heritage in the Buganda Kingdom, Anthony Wamala, urged young people to pay close attention to their environment and use available resources wisely for the benefit of their communities.

He emphasised that environmental protection begins with the youth and encouraged innovative thinking, especially in recycling materials such as plastics.

“We want our children not only to excel academically but also to open their minds to creativity and innovation — for instance, learning to make useful products from plastics.

The Kingdom has already introduced initiatives like the bottle collection program to generate income and conserve the environment,” Wamala said.

Wamala further reminded the children that success and prosperity come to those who are courageous and disciplined. He called upon parents to nurture confidence and public-speaking skills in their children so they can boldly address the challenges they face in their daily lives.

The First Deputy to the Kaggo, Ronald Bakulumpagi, commended the organisers for their efforts to strengthen the use of the Luganda language among children. He highlighted that promoting Luganda helps preserve identity and culture in a generation increasingly influenced by foreign languages.

The Sub-County Chief of Mituba II Nabweru, Omumbejja Mariam Ndagire, explained that the event was designed to restore and celebrate Buganda’s cultural heritage by instilling traditional values in children.

She emphasised that nurturing such values from an early age ensures that future generations will appreciate and protect their culture.

“Through these tourism and cultural competitions, we aim to make this an annual event that continually educates, inspires, and connects our children to their roots,” Ndagire said.

The 2025 Tourism Prince and Princess competition concluded with Mayanja Shaban from Vintage House Infant and Primary School, Kawanda, emerging as the overall winner.

He was followed by Kabazzi Daphine Mary from St. Lawrence Primary School, Kagoma, as the first runner-up.

The event received widespread praise for promoting cultural values, creativity, environmental conservation, and the preservation of the Luganda language among young learners.
