Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Kenya’s ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA), have agreed to strengthen political cooperation while upholding the rule of law and rejecting extremism.
This was revealed on Saturday after the NRM delegation led by secretary general Richard Todwong and his hosts from UDA held a meeting in Nairobi.
The NRM team was welcomed by the UDA leaders, led by the secretary general, Sen. Omar Hassan.
The meeting came at the backdrop of one held last year in Uganda when UDA delegation visited the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi and expressed interest in enrolling some of their cadres at the institute for cadre development.
In his remarks, Todwong thanked the Kenyan delegation for hosting him and his team before delivering President Yoweri Museveni’s regards to them.
He reported that the two teams held fruitful discussions for the benefit of the two countries.
“We emphasized cooperation that will promote party-to-party relations, people-to-people, and government-to-government,” he said.
“As you all know, Kenya is the umbilical cord of our economy, and therefore, whatever takes place in Kenya affects Uganda directly. So it is in our interest that the fraternal friendship that we have with the people of Kenya and the leadership of Kenya should be enhanced and promoted to a higher level,” the SG noted.
“We pray and hope that this collaboration continues, and we shall also expect that our comrades in UDA, together with the Secretary General, will pay us a visit for a more detailed discussion that we shall have with Uganda.”
UDA secretary general Omar told the media that both parties agreed to enhance cooperation in legislating on policy matters, ensuring effective governance and swift implementation of development initiatives of the two countries.
On social harmony, the officials agreed that the parties should promote national unity, tolerance, and protection of civil rights, rejecting all forms of division and extremism.
“As ruling parties, we agreed to work towards good governance of our nations, strengthening transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, as key priorities to restore public trust in institutions that we consider the solid foundation of our nations,” Omar said.
“Both parties agreed to pursue a coordinated approach to foreign policy, safeguarding national interests while fostering international partnerships, which we consider key priorities of our nations,” he added.
Omar also noted the UDA and NRM agreed to work together in the interest of peace, stability, and sustainable development of the two nations.
“Regular consultations will be held to monitor progress and deepen cooperation,” Omar said.
Todwong’s team included Maj (Rtd) Awich Pollar, NRM’s Director for External Affairs, and Col Okei Rukogota, Director of the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
