NRM Launches Buganda for Museveni Drive in Rakai

Africa-Press – Uganda. Leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) launched a vigorous grassroots campaign in Rakai District on Sunday under the banner Buganda for Museveni, as part of efforts to solidify the party’s support base in central Uganda ahead of the next general elections.

The mobilization event, held at Kiziba Grounds, brought together NRM Members of Parliament from across Buganda, Cabinet ministers, local leaders, and hundreds of residents.

The campaign was spearheaded by Rakai Woman MP Juliet Ssuubi Kinyamatama, who described the drive as a strategic move to maintain and expand the NRM’s influence in a district where it currently holds all parliamentary seats.

“We are committed to winning all political positions in Rakai again,” declared Buyamba MP and NRM district chairperson Gyaviira Ssemwanga Kisoboka.

“This campaign reaffirms our commitment to President Museveni’s leadership and the NRM’s development agenda.”

However, alongside political mobilization, the event became a platform for addressing local grievances. MP Kinyamatama voiced serious concern over rampant land grabbing, which she said has displaced families and sown fear among residents.

“This issue has reached a critical level. People are suffering, and I call on authorities to act immediately before the situation deteriorates,” she said.

She also condemned the mistreatment of fishermen on Lake Kijanebalola and surrounding waters, accusing law enforcement agencies of impounding boats and nets over minor infractions.

She urged the return of seized property to allow affected families to resume work.

Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba reassured residents that government would protect legitimate landowners and that her ministry had already cancelled several illegal land titles in the region.

“No one will take your land if you rightfully own it,” she said. “Government is here to protect you.”

Energy Minister Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa responded to complaints about unreliable electricity, particularly in Rakai and surrounding areas like Bendobendo in Masaka.

She said contractors had been tasked to expedite grid expansion and improve service delivery.

Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, also in attendance, promised that community concerns—including poor roads and lack of clean water—are being addressed. He encouraged residents to engage in government development programs.

“Government is committed to improving service delivery in Rakai. Let us work together to transform our communities and reduce poverty,” he said.

Robert Migadde, Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus in Buganda, led fellow MPs in urging Rakai residents to maintain loyalty to the ruling party, framing it as the only reliable path to meaningful development.

“Support for NRM means access to real development and better services,” he said. “Let us work together to continue the progress.”

The event concluded with renewed pledges from both leaders and locals to uphold Rakai as a steadfast NRM stronghold and to rally behind President Museveni in upcoming elections.
