Africa-Press – Uganda. Singer-turned-politician Ali Buken, popularly known as Nubian Li, has been confirmed as the National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer for the Nakawa Division mayoral seat in the 2026 general elections.
The confirmation came on Friday as NUP unveiled its full list of candidates who will represent the party across various divisions.
Nubian Li appeared among the successful aspirants, securing his chance to contest for the leadership of Nakawa Division.
He will be seeking to succeed current mayor Paul Mugambe, who won the seat on the NUP ticket in the 2021 elections.
Nubian Li’s political journey has long been tied to NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine.
The two share a close friendship that began in the music industry and later transitioned into politics.
Nubian has often been described as Bobi Wine’s right-hand man, playing a pivotal role during the 2021 campaigns that cemented NUP’s rise as Uganda’s leading opposition force.
His loyalty to the party has been tested on several occasions.
In early 2021, he was among the group of NUP supporters arrested during the campaign trail, an experience that only strengthened his resolve to remain in politics.
With the NUP card secured, Nubian Li now faces a new test—convincing voters in Nakawa Division to entrust him with the mayoral office.
He has consistently said his political ambition is driven by the desire to serve the people and to continue the struggle for change alongside Kyagulanyi.
