Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has expanded its support base in remote parts of Ntungamo District, a development the opposition party credits to intensified grassroots mobilisation over the past five years.
Magambo Rubahamya, the NUP district chairperson, said the party has seen a rise in both candidates and supporters, despite facing challenges of intimidation.
“We have had candidates and support from hard-to-reach areas. The support is still increasing, and we are going deeper into the villages compared to the last five years. This is for both leaders and supporters, and it is a great achievement,” Rubahamya noted.
He described the growth as a sign of NUP’s determination to remain relevant and competitive in Ntungamo politics, where the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has traditionally enjoyed dominance.
“As day follows night, we will be there. We are on ground,” Rubahamya said.
He pointed to the party’s expansion into villages such as Kabezi, Kirungu, and Sofia as evidence that its grassroots approach is yielding results.
According to him, areas that were once politically inaccessible are turning into new centres of support, widening NUP’s footprint in the district ahead of the 2026 elections.
