NUP Delays MP Vetting Due to Changed Nomination Dates

Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has postponed its vetting of parliamentary aspirants, accusing the Electoral Commission of making abrupt changes to nomination schedules without consultation.

Party officials say the adjustments have disrupted their election roadmap and undermined their internal preparations.

The NUP Elections Management Committee condemned what it described as unilateral alterations by the Electoral Commission (EC), saying the shifting of nomination dates for parliamentary candidates—announced without prior notice—forced them to delay the vetting exercise that was originally set for August 25, 2025.

The process will now begin on September 15, 2025, and run for seven consecutive days.

“These last-minute changes have thrown our program off balance. The Electoral Commission must respect political parties and involve all stakeholders before altering such critical timelines,” said Harriet Chemutai, chairperson of the NUP Elections Management Committee.

The party stressed that vetting is a vital step to ensure only credible, competent, and committed candidates carry the NUP flag into the 2026 general elections.

Officials warned that such disruptions could undermine internal democracy and weaken public trust in the electoral process.

While the Electoral Commission has yet to respond, political analysts note that clashes over timelines between political parties and the EC are common in the run-up to elections.

The revised schedule leaves NUP with only a few weeks between the conclusion of vetting and the official nomination period, raising concerns about whether the party will have enough time to finalize campaign preparations.
