Africa-Press – Uganda. Mercy Alupo Marion, a National Unity Platform (NUP) member and former youth leader, has declared her bid for the Bukedea Woman MP seat. She will challenge the current seat holder, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, in the upcoming general elections.
Speaking to journalists after her announcement, Alupo pointed to poor service delivery as her reason for running. She cited problems in health and education.
“Bukedea is grappling with serious gaps in healthcare and education. I believe I have the passion and commitment to advocate for meaningful change,” she said.
Alupo is a former National Youth League treasurer under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). She also served as Guild Prime Minister at Kyambogo University and led the Teso Students Association.
She said her leadership and activism background prepared her for this challenge.
“For those seeing me for the first time, I am not a political novice,” Alupo stated confidently.
Asked about contesting against Speaker Among, Alupo admitted the risks but expressed faith in voters.
“We have seen what happens during elections, but power belongs to the people. I’m emotionally ready for anything that comes my way,” she said.
Alupo also criticised the current leadership, saying it no longer connects with the people.
“Many of our leaders have become too comfortable. It’s time for young, energetic, and people-focused leadership to take over,” she added.
Her declaration sets the stage for a high-stakes race in Bukedea, a politically sensitive district represented by one of the most powerful figures in Uganda’s Parliament.
