Nup'S Sauda Madada Arrested in Busia

Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed the arrest of Kampala Woman Lord Councillor aspirant Sauda Madada, a staunch loyalist of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

According to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Madada was picked up by police in Busia as she attempted to cross into Kenya.

“We’ve been informed of the arrest of our sister Sauda Madada by the police at Busia. When she inquired why, she was told that her file is at Wandegeya Police and that she would be transferred there,” Rubongoya said.

Madada, who was officially nominated last week as an independent candidate for Kampala Central Woman Lord Councillor, becomes the latest NUP figure to be arrested in recent days.

On Monday, party deputy spokesperson Alex Mufumbiro was detained outside Kawempe Magistrate’s Court, while Bobi Wine’s longtime confidante and musical partner, Ali Bukeni (Nubian Li), was picked up shortly after his nomination as Nakawa Mayor on Tuesday.

A seasoned mobiliser and one of NUP’s top “security” officials, Madada has long been regarded as a frontline commander within the party, enduring arrests, imprisonment, and frequent clashes with security forces.

On Monday, NUP sounded alarm over the spate of what they termed as abductions and intimidation of its supporters by security forces ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Sources in security say the party members are being picked up one after the other in connection to an incident back in February.

On Monday, September 8, five party loyalists werecharged and remanded to Luzira Prison by the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court over allegations of engaging in unlawful military drills at the party’s headquarters in Kavule, Makerere, on February 12, 2025.

Calvin Tasi, alias Bobi Giant, Edwin Serunkuuma, alias Eddie King Kabenja, Sharif Lukenge, Yasin Nyanzi, and Tonny Kaweesi were added to the charge sheet alongside Edward Sebuufu alias Eddy Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi, who were previously remanded on similar charges.

Prosecution alleges that on February 12, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, the accused and others still at large participated in a meeting or assembly without authorization from the Minister, where they allegedly conducted military training, movements, and drills.

The suspects are also charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, with prosecution arguing that they plotted to engage in unlawful drilling in contravention of Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.

Back in February, military leadership had warned NUP against engaging in military-like drills with suggestions that they would be dealt with.

Madada is being held at Wandegeya Police Station pending her production in court.
