Africa-Press – Uganda. Junior Energy Minister and national youth MP Phiona Nyamutoro is making her move—and it’s a bold one.
The youthful minister has thrown her hat into the ring for the Nebbi District Woman Representative seat in the 2026 general elections.
Currently held by Agnes Acibu of the ruling NRM— the same party Nyamutoro is a part of— the seat is now set to become a hotly contested prize in the next political cycle.
Nyamutoro’s announcement came with perfect timing, coinciding with Mother’s Day celebrations, where she strategically combined her tributes to mothers with an unmistakable political message.
Posting a campaign image on her X platform, she wrote, “Nebbi has mothered many great and significant citizens for our nation, and now it’s time for me to shine. Happy Mother’s Day!”
While the message celebrated mothers, it was clear to all that her aspirations had moved beyond just motherhood to claim political prominence.
The announcement has sparked a wave of mixed reactions, with supporters rallying behind the minister.
Among her most vocal backers was State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Lilian Aber, who gleefully proclaimed, “Oyeeeeeee! Nebbi here we come!”
Many of Nyamutoro’s followers rallied around her with praise, calling for a continuation of the trailblazing work of Uganda’s iconic women leaders.
“The pursuit of affirmative action in leadership and inclusivity must continue. Rhoda Kalema, Matembe, Cecilia Ogwal, etc., left their mark. Now Aber and others should further it,” commented Julius Sendijja.
It’s not just political activists behind Nyamutoro’s campaign; her ties to the entertainment industry, particularly her relationship with artist Eddie Kenzo, are also drawing attention.
Nyamutoro is not the only high-profile female minister eyeing a seat currently held by a compatriot. Gender and Labour Minister Betty Amongi is making waves as she gears up to contest the Lira District Woman MP seat in 2026.
Amongi will be challenging Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng, who currently holds the position.
This sets up an intriguing showdown, not only between two high-ranking women in the NRM but also between two powerful political forces with established reputations.
Nyamutoro’s political timing is sharp. In August 2024, President Museveni singled out Nyamutoro for praise during a thanksgiving ceremony, highlighting her dedication to the NRM.
“Phiona Nyamutooro, as a younger minister, has distinguished herself by actively campaigning for the party while other youth of her age remain idle,” Museveni said.
MP Acibu has yet to react on Nyamutooro’s declaration and efforts to get in touch with her for a comment were futile at the time of publishing this article.
