Odoi Nullifies NRM Primaries in Kapchorwa over Irregularities

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, Tanga Odoi, has nullified primary election results in Kapchorwa District and several other areas following what he described as “gross irregularities” and misconduct by party officials.

Addressing journalists in Kampala today, Odoi revealed that the elections held on July 17 for the Tingey County MP and Kapchorwa Woman MP seats were plagued by malpractice and outright defiance of party electoral guidelines.

“The election in Kapchorwa was mismanaged by our staff, who instead indulged in corruption and failed to follow the party’s electoral guidelines. Some even refused to read out the results,” Odoi said.

The announcement voids all declared outcomes from the district’s primaries.

Odoi confirmed that a fresh election would be conducted for both constituencies, with the date to be announced shortly.

Incumbent MP Twala Fadil had been seeking to retain his Tingey County seat, while a competitive race was unfolding for the Woman MP flag.

However, multiple reports emerged of bribery and voter intimidation. In some polling centres, returning officers allegedly absconded without announcing results.

Kapchorwa now joins a growing list of districts—alongside parts of Sembabule, Mbale, and Nakaseke—where NRM’s internal elections have been mired in controversy. The party has faced mounting pressure from its supporters and aspirants to restore credibility to the primary process.

Dr. Odoi reiterated the commission’s commitment to upholding transparency and fairness in the repeat polls, warning party officials against any further attempts to subvert internal democracy.
