Africa-Press – Uganda. As it celebrates 30 years of service, Opportunity Bank Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship through its annual charity run held on Sunday, at its Head Office in Kamwokya.
Under the theme “Planting Hope, Growing Change, Greening the Future,” the event featured 5km and 10km runs aimed at raising awareness on climate change and supporting reforestation efforts across the country.
Since May 2024, Opportunity Bank has partnered with the Lukango Tree Conservancy (LuTreeCo) to implement a national school greening initiative, planting over 3,000 indigenous trees in 66 schools across Uganda’s four regions.
The program actively involves more than 3,000 students, promoting environmental education while enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience in diverse ecological zones—from flood-prone Soroti to drought-affected Kikuube.
Opportunity Bank CEO Owen Amanya highlighted the critical importance of these efforts in light of Uganda’s declining forest cover, which has fallen from 24% in 1990 to just 9.5% today.
He emphasized that each tree planted contributes to carbon sequestration, ecosystem restoration, and community resilience.
“The trees we’re planting today are more than just saplings—they are seeds of hope and commitments to lasting change,” Amanya said.
“Through this initiative, we are fostering a generation of environmental stewards who will safeguard Uganda’s natural heritage.”
Proceeds and awareness from the Opportunity Bank Run will continue to fund and expand the school greening program and related community conservation projects.
The Bank expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors, schools, and partners whose collective efforts are driving Uganda’s journey toward a greener, more sustainable future.
