Africa-Press – Uganda. Opposition MPs summoned for Emergency meeting ahead of UPDF Bill The opposition in Parliament has been summoned for an emergency meeting on Monday, ahead of the second reading of the contentious UPDF Amendment Bill 2025.
The meeting comes as the opposition grapples with internal debates on how to approach the bill, which proposes to legalize the trial of civilians in the General Court Martial.
According to the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, there are divergent voices within the opposition camp.
“There are voices telling us not to be part of the Tuesday sitting, and other voices telling us to participate and fight the bill on the floor,” Ssenyonyi said.
The Monday meeting will determine the opposition’s next step.
Ssenyonyi expressed concerns over the speed at which the bill is being processed, questioning whether sufficient time has been given to key stakeholders to present their submissions.
“We’re questioning the speed at which the bill is being processed without allowing ample time for key stakeholders to present their submissions,” he emphasized.
The emergency meeting on Monday will provide a platform for opposition MPs to discuss and decide on their strategy regarding the UPDF Amendment Bill 2025.
