KAMPALA – Police in Katwe and Kira road Division are holding 329 suspects who were arrested during its Christmas operations targeting bars that were operating contrary to the Ministry of Health guidelines. 147 suspects were arrested in various bars which included Happy Boys Namasuba, New Best Hotel Nateete and several others.Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigire confirmed that the suspects were found operating against the Ministry of Health guidelines and violating the curfew as well.”They are currently held at Katwe Police on allegations of engaging in a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease contrary to section 171 of the Penal Code Act and will appear in court on Monday December 28, 2020,” Oweyesigire stated.He also noted that Kira Division also held operations in different areas of their responsibility and arrested 182 people.”We warn bar owners that operations to enforce guidelines against the spread of Coronavirus are on and those found operating bars in contravention of the fight against COVID-19 will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Oweyesigire added.In March this year, President Yoweri Museveni announced several measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 key of them was the closure of bars, schools and churches. Even though several of those restrictions were lifted, ban on bars was never lifted and they have continued to operate illegally.
