Africa-Press – Uganda. A major political shakeup has hit the Justice Forum (JEEMA) party after 53 district leaders, alongside former party spokesperson Abdulnoor Kyamundu Ssentongo, announced their resignation, citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s top leadership.
In a public statement issued Thursday, Ssentongo said the group had “exhausted all internal and external dispute resolution mechanisms,” including legal proceedings, before arriving at the decision to sever ties with JEEMA.
“We have decided to discontinue our allegiance to JEEMA due to irreconcilable differences,” Ssentongo said.
“The core values, beliefs, and methods of work that attracted us to JEEMA were long abandoned by an untouchable clique within the leadership.”
According to Ssentongo, the group is disillusioned by what they describe as a shift in the party’s direction and a betrayal of its founding principles.
“We believe our constituents who still believe in justice deserve representation that truly reflects their needs and interests,” he added.
The defecting members did, however, express gratitude for their time within the party and appreciation toward a group of senior JEEMA figures who, they said, had remained committed to the party’s founding ideals.
“We are grateful for the support, guidance, and mentorship we’ve received from a section of elders in JEEMA who remained true to its principles, despite fierce resistance from the clique that treats JEEMA as a personal estate,” Ssentongo noted.
While the group has not officially announced their next political move, Ssentongo confirmed they are “exploring options of association that better align with \[their] aspirations.”
“A final decision will be communicated in due course,” he concluded.
JEEMA has yet to issue a response to the mass resignation. The development comes at a time when several opposition parties in Uganda are facing internal divisions ahead of the next election cycle.
