Africa-Press – Uganda. At least 9.1 million Ugandans have registered for renewal of their national identification card in the ongoing mass renewal exercise, the National Identification and Registration Authority(NIRA) has said.
Updating the country on Monday, NIRA registrar, Claire Ollama said there has been enormous progress in the ongoing registration exercise in the past two months.
“ We have registered 9.1 million Ugandans in two months. Of these, eight million were renewing, 800,000 were first-timers and the rest are those wit National Identification Numbers and applying for their first National IDs,” Ollama said.
She said at least 800,000 have also been registered during this period, noting that this indicates the exercise has been positively received.
“ It means people are appreciating the value of the unique identity of children. It means if you still have a child you haven’t yet registered you are doing them a disservice. We want to ask people to make the choice to enroll their children,” Ollama said.
She said whereas they have so far printed more than 100,000 National ID cards, they are yet to be issued until such a time comes.
Ugandans’ first batch of national IDs were printed and issued between 2014 and 2015 and after 10 years, they expired last year in 2024 and this year 2025.
Government recently extended the expiry period for one year.
At least 15.8 million national identity cards are expected to expire by August this year.
The ongoing mass registration exercise is meant to renew the national IDs but also add advanced security features for easy identification.
NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo recently said only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered, of the 45.9 million according to last year’s census.
