MUKONO – Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat on Saturday failed to hold his campaign rally in Mukono town after the police blocked him. This forced him to return to Kampala after the police sealed off the Kampala-Jinja Highway and lobbed teargassed to avoid people gathering.

That Mukono reception contrasted sharply with the one he had received in Kayunga, where he had earlier in the day campaigned with little restraint. By the time he left the district at about 4:00 pm, Amuriat had combed the trading centers of Kitwe, Bbale, Bukolooto and Nanzigo for votes after Kayunga District Police Commander John Lukooto allowed Amuriat access to the areas.

Police have severally accused Amuriat and National Unity Platform Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi of running defiance campaigns, causing public disorder and flaunting guidelines on covid-19.However, the Opposition candidates insist it is a ploy to prevent them from accessing the people under the guise of fighting the spread of Covid-19 and maintaining public order.

“He has begun to panic and arrested many of us. He arrested me on nomination day because he fears I would come here and expose him to you voters. But I will not stop. Whether Museveni wants it or not, change is coming to our country and it will come soon if he does not retire in public interest,” Amuriat said while campaigning in Buikwe district on Friday.
