Police officer killed by goons in Mbarara laid to rest

Africa-PressUganda. The Officer in Charge of Ruharo police post who was killed by thugs on Wednesday has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Katojjo Cell, Nyakayojo ward in Mbarara city south division.

Late Richard Agaba was shot in the stomach by armed robbers whom he was pursuing after they attacked Step Up bar in Kiyanja cell, Ruharo ward. He died on arrival at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital due to heavy bleeding.

The acting Mbarara City Police Commander, Sakinah Birungi, told hundreds of mourners that had gathered to pay their last respects to the fallen officer, that they had in custody suspects connected to the heinous crime.

“We are really aggrieved, it is so painful to lose one of our own like that. We feel so bad, but we can assure you the thugs will be brought to book,” he said.

The Officer in Charge of Mbarara Central Police Station, Mr Swizin Tibesigwa, described Agaba as a hardworking man, courageous, a listener, loving and God-fearing.

Ms Lydia Agaba, the widow, said her husband has not been having any other underlying medical conditions.

“My husband loved his work so much and that’s why he died on duty. He was not having any medical challenges,” she said.

Mbarara City South Division Mayor, Mr Jomo Mugabe, said the security situation in the area is currently alarming as the panga-wielding men are terrorizing citizens.

“What we have been hearing in Kampala and Masaka is now here. They have already dropped leaflets in Nyamitanga warning the locals that they are coming to cut their heads. So let everybody be cautious as the security forces do their work,” he said.

The late Richard Agaba was survived by a widow and five children.
