Africa-Press – Uganda. VIOLENCE |The Police in Kampala, working with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have started conducting operations aimed at apprehending unauthorized fuel dealers. In a joint operation conducted in Kajumbi Zone in Natete on Friday, at least 76 jerrycans and seven drums of fuel totaling 2,920 litres of fuel were recovered during the operation. It is suspected that the fuel recovered was sold to rioters to burn tyres during the recent skirmishes in Kampala city and its suburbs where over 54 people were shot dead by security personnel as they pursued the rioters. The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango said the operation was still ongoing and the security personnel were still combing and searching all the places suspected to be hiding the illegal fuel.According to Onyango, the security personnel acted on intelligence information and the operation would go on throughout the night. He, however, said the suspects fled the scenes of crime after a tip-off and the hunt for them was still on.Onyango, however, warned all people involved in the illegal sale of fuel that the long arm of the law will catch up with them. The police recently banned the sale of fuel in bottles and jerrycans and launched investigations into the sale of used tyres in Kampalacity after it was allegedly revealed that some of the youth who took part in the riots last month carried bottles of fuel, which the police insists the rioters were planning to use in making petrol bombs.Police spokesman, Fred Enanga disclosed that the police had sent notices to fuel stations to limit selling fuel in small jerrycans and bottles.
