Political Heavyweights Clash in Moroto MP Race

Africa-Press – Uganda. The political temperature in Moroto Municipality is rising sharply as three formidable candidates lock horns in a hotly contested race for the area’s parliamentary seat, ahead of next week’s NRM primaries.

Incumbent MP Francis Lorika Adome is fighting to retain his seat amidst mounting pressure from two determined challengers Fred Angella, a former MP seeking a comeback, and Esther Pulkol Angella Lochomin, a prominent human rights lawyer making her political debut.

What began as a routine campaign season has quickly escalated into one of the most watched political showdowns in Karamoja sub-region, with rallies growing larger, messages sharper, and voter engagement surging.

“People want leaders who listen and act. I am offering them that choice,” said Esther Pulkol whose message of accountability, youth inclusion, and women’s empowerment has rapidly gained traction among first-time voters and grassroots organizers.

Pulkol, known for her fearless advocacy in legal circles, is positioning herself as the fresh alternative to Moroto’s political establishment. Despite being a newcomer to elective politics, she is drawing impressive crowds and shaking up traditional voting patterns.

Meanwhile, Fred Angella, who lost the seat to Adome in the 2021 general elections, is returning with renewed vigor.

“The work I started remains unfinished. Moroto deserves a leader who won’t just promise but deliver,” Angella declared pointing fingers at the stalling progress of the government in giving Moroto a City Status.

Francis Lorika Adome, the sitting MP, is campaigning hard on a platform of continuity and development, pointing to various initiatives launched during his tenure—including youth skills training programs, scholarships, economic empowerment and small-business support schemes.

“My track record speaks for itself,” Adome told this publication. “This is not the time to experiment. We must consolidate our gains.”

But voters seem split, and the stakes are higher than ever. As the campaign trail heats up, tensions are also flaring, with some confrontations reported between rival supporter groups in trading centers and during roadside rallies.

With just days to the primaries, the political atmosphere in Moroto Municipality is charged

. Observers say the outcome of this race could not only decide the area’s next MP but also signal a broader shift in Karamoja’s political direction

As the clock ticks down to Election Day, one thing is clear: Moroto is no longer a quiet political corner—it’s become the arena for a fierce, defining contest.
