Africa-Press – Uganda. FESTIVE SEASON | SECURITY |The festive season is around the corner and everyone is eager. Among those looking forward to it are criminals, who are busy masterminding plans to commit various offences. It is not uncommon for people to go away and find your home ransacked, cars stolen or children kidnapped even as you celebrate.Whereas oftentimes the victims are outsmarted by criminals, sometimes, they predispose themselves to these crimes either through laxity or ignorance.According to James Ruhweza, the Regional Police Commander of Kampala south, one of the most common ways people innocently make themselves targets is by updating their every move on social media. This especially when one is away for Christmas is extremely dangerous because thugs are on social media too and when you constantly update your status, you show them how and when to attack.”A thug can be your nearest neighbour so do not trust anybody!” he adds.Another common mistake made is over delegating, especially when it comes to children. “Housemaids are the leading source of insecurity to children,” Ruhweza says.He advises parents to be vigilant and micromanage the safety and security of their children during the festive season. “It is ok to trust a maid but as a parent, you have to control and oversee all the activities concerning your child. Know where they are at all times and with whom. Trust is good but control is much better,” he says. That said, there are some other measures that one can take to beef up security in the home this Christmas. Ruhweza advises the following:
However, should you return home to find your home vandalized, Ruhweza advises not tampering with the scene of the crime, rather preserving it and calling the area police to come to your aid.
