Africa-Press – Uganda. The latest National Household Survey by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics has indicated that services are still the largest employer of Ugandans.
Services include among others, transports sector, salons, retail shops and traders among others.
The 2023/24 survey released at Hotel Africana on Thursday indicated that services employ 47.3% of Ugandans, followed by agriculture which also includes fishing and forestry at 40.1% while industry follows at a distant 12.6%.
According to the survey, the trend changes in rural areas with agriculture taking the lion’s share in terms of employment.
Agriculture employs 55% of Ugandans in rural areas while 33.7% are employed in the services sector.
On the other side, services employ 63.9% of the population in urban areas with only 22% employed in agriculture.
On the overall, the survey shows that whereas the percentage of Ugandans employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing has gone up from 35.8% in 2017 to 39.8% in 2020 and 40.1% in 2024, the percentage of those employed in services has continued to go down from 50.3% in 2017, 46.2% in 2020 but has gone slightly up to 47.3%.
The figures point to the recent trend where the number of Ugandans directly involved in agriculture has considerably gone up.
For example, many of those who previously despised agriculture have developed love for it, with many now investing in coffee farming.
The latest survey by UBOS shows that there has been an increase in the Ugandan population from 46.2% in 2019 to 47% in 2024.
The report also shows that there has been a reduction in the percentage of population involved in industries but an increase in those employed in services and agriculture.
