Africa-Press – Uganda. The Teso District Council of Sheikhs has unanimously selected 47-year-old Sheikh Ramadhan Ibrahim Ibwakiti as the new District Kadhi, replacing Sheikh Asuman Muhammad Ocen, who had served in an acting capacity for the past nine years.
The nomination exercise was held at Soroti Muslim School within the District Main Mosque and presided over by Abubaker Were Wandagho, National Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission for the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
Key religious and community leaders attended the session, including Sheikh Imran Ssali, UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs; Sheikh Abubakar Umar Obilan, North Eastern Regional Assistant to the Mufti-RAM; Haj Isaac Omoding; Hassan Otai; Sheikh Abdu Mutwalib Musa Waiswa, and Mr. Miro Fakir, Teso Muslim District Chairperson.
The council began by reviewing Articles 19–22 of the amended UMSC Constitution 2022, which outline the process for selecting a Kadhi. Following deliberations, Sheikh Ibwakiti, a soft-spoken cleric with a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), was forwarded as the sole candidate to the Mufti. His appointment will be finalized in consultation with the Majlis Al Ulama – the Council of Eminent Sheikhs.Sheikh Ibwakiti has previously served as a member of Majlis Al Ulama representing the North Eastern region. The District Joint Committee, chaired by Mr. Fakir, later endorsed the selection.
In his remarks, Sheikh Imran Ssali called on Muslims in Teso to examine their personal contributions to the faith, while Sheikh Obilan urged community support for the new Kadhi. Outgoing Kadhi Sheikh Ocen thanked the Mufti and pledged continued service in other roles. Sheikh Ibwakiti, meanwhile, promised to work closely with the council in executing his duties.
