Africa-Press – Uganda. The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has urged a Ghanaian parliamentary delegation to resist external influence and uphold African cultural norms as they draft their anti-homosexuality bill.

Among met with the delegation, led by Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who visited Uganda to learn from the country’s experience in passing the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA).

The law, enacted in 2023, criminalises same-sex relations and imposes severe penalties, drawing strong international condemnation.

“We are proud of passing the Anti-Homosexuality Act despite the international sanctions imposed on some leaders,” Among said.

In 2024, the United Kingdom and United States governments sanctioned Ms Among personally over what they termed as gross corruption in relation to the misappropriated iron sheets meant for vulnerable Karimojong.

But Ms Among insisted that the sanctions were politically motivated because she presided over a Parliament that passed the law.

She reportedly dismissed the sanctions as attempts by “bum-shafters” to intimidate Uganda’s leaders.

“Don’t be intimidated by external forces; stand and protect African culture,” she advised the Ghanaian MPs on Wednesday.

Amoako noted that Ghana seeks to learn from Uganda’s experience, highlighting the benefits of safeguarding African traditions.

“After Uganda passed the bill, it was prudent for us to learn from your experience,” he said.

Among also warned the Ghanaian delegation against external actors she said aim to undermine African culture and values.

“Be aware of detractors; they want to undermine our culture and values,” she cautioned.

The delegation invited Speaker Among to the 4th African Regional Parliamentary Conference on Sovereignty in Accra, scheduled for May 27–30, 2026.
