Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth has called for a “factory reset” of Parliament, saying the institution must return to its constitutional mandate by strengthening accountability, committee work and respect for other arms of government.
Oboth made the remarks on Monday while meeting the Chief Editor of 52 Dimensions Magazine, Kenneth Asiimwe, who presented him with a commemorative edition highlighting the contributions of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to peace, professionalism and regional stability.
“Parliament must go back to basics. We need a factory reset that puts accountability at the center, strengthens our committees, and reminds every Member that our primary duty is legislation, oversight and representation,” Oboth said.
He said Parliament can only regain public confidence if legislators base their debates on facts and evidence while respecting the roles of other state institutions.
“When we respect institutions and focus on our legislative responsibilities, we shall restore the lost glory of this House,” he added.
The commemorative edition of 52 Dimensions Magazine also features the work of the Uganda Childhood Cancer Foundation, highlighting efforts to support children battling cancer across the country.
Oboth commended Asiimwe for using the publication to document stories of national service and humanitarian work.
“I thank you, Kenneth Asiimwe, for documenting the work of Gen. Muhoozi and the UPDF in maintaining peace and stability. I also commend you for spotlighting the Uganda Childhood Cancer Foundation. These are stories that inspire patriotism and give hope,” he said.
Asiimwe said the magazine seeks to profile leaders and institutions making meaningful contributions in the areas of security, governance and humanitarian service.
The Speaker’s remarks come amid heightened public scrutiny of Parliament over its oversight role, service delivery and the conduct of some legislators both inside and outside the House.
