Ssemakadde Faces Triple Legal Storm

Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Isaac Ssemakadde is battling three court cases in a single day, with legal challenges ranging from his leadership decisions to accusations of contempt of court and insulting the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo.

One case, filed by lawyers Tony Tumukunde and Joshua Byamazima, contests Ssemakadde’s dismissal of the Attorney General and Solicitor General from the ULS Council.

The petitioners argue he acted without due process, disrupting the council’s lawful composition. The hearing has been adjourned to March 17, 2025, following the trial judge’s promotion to the Court of Appeal.

Ssemakadde, however, defends his decision, citing allegations of misconduct and conflicts of interest against the Attorney General.

Simultaneously, Ssemakadde faced a contempt of court case before Justice Musa Ssekaana, with lawyers representing Mugisha Hashim Mugisha seeking a fine of Shs300 million or imprisonment.

The case, which stems from allegations that Ssemakadde’s statements erode public trust in the judiciary, is proceeding ex parte after he failed to appear in court.

A ruling is expected on February 28, 2025.

In a third case, Tumukunde and Byamazima accuse Ssemakadde of insulting the modesty of DPP Abodo, citing remarks he allegedly made at a symposium, where he reportedly referred to Abodo in derogatory terms.

Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court is set to rule electronically on whether to issue a warrant for his arrest, while Ssemakadde has challenged the summons in the High Court’s Criminal Division, with a hearing scheduled for February 11, 2025.

The series of cases has sparked debate over Ssemakadde’s leadership, his confrontations with the judiciary, and the broader implications for the Uganda Law Society.
