Ssempijja Petitions Court over Kalungu East Poll Results

Africa-Press – Uganda. Former Defence Minister Vincent Ssempijja has appeared before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court to await the commencement of his election petition challenging the outcome of the Kalungu East parliamentary race.

Ssempijja contends that the polling exercise held last week was marred by gross irregularities which, he argues, denied him victory. He is seeking a court order for a recount of votes cast in the constituency, insisting that a fresh tally would reflect the true will of the electorate.

According to the declared results, National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Yusuf Kiruluuta Nkeretanyi won the seat with 15,473 votes, defeating Ssempijja, who polled 13,219 votes.

Other contenders in the race were Francis Katabazi (Independent) with 649 votes, Katongole Deogratious with 637, Irene Nanyazi with 485, Mathias Kintu with 189, and Democratic Party’s Asuman Kabonge, who garnered 90 votes.

Court is expected to fix a hearing date for the petition, after which Ssempijja’s legal team will present evidence to support

claims of electoral malpractice. The case adds to a growing list of post-election disputes being handled by courts following the recently concluded general elections.
