Ssenyonyi Criticizes Govt over Uganda Cranes’ Poor Accommodation

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has criticised government for allegedly housing the national football team in a substandard hotel in Kisasi, a Kampala suburb.

Ssenyonyi raised the concern during a parliamentary session on Wednesday , as MPs paid tribute to the Uganda Cranes for their performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship.

He said the hotel where the players stayed was not suitable for a national team.

“We were dumbfounded when we saw on the news, the hotel facility at which the Uganda Cranes were staying somewhere in Kisasi. The road to the hotel was not accessible. I am told the bus would stop somewhere and then they alight to access the hotel,” he said.

Ssenyonyi questioned why government could allocate Shs 1.2 billion to the team for each match won, yet fail to secure decent accommodation.

“Our opponents were staying at good five-star hotels.

I think we can afford for our stars to stay at good facilities. If we can afford to give them Shs 1.2 billion per win, then we can afford to put them in a good place where they are safe,” he added.

The opposition leader warned that poor accommodation exposed the team to insecurity and discomfort.

He urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to address the matter urgently.
