Africa-Press – Uganda. In a move to bridge the digital divide in rural Uganda, Stanbic Bank Uganda has donated modern computers worth Shs 30 million to Petta Community Secondary School in Tororo District.
The gesture underscores the bank’s commitment to advancing education and promoting digital literacy under its purpose statement, “Uganda is our home, we drive her growth.”
The donation comes at a time when schools are adapting to the new competence-based curriculum, which places Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the centre of learning.
For years, Petta Community Secondary School — a Universal Secondary Education (USE)-founded institution established in 2007 — has struggled with limited access to ICT equipment, forcing over 2,000 students to share just a handful of computers.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Martine Sekaziga, Chief Risk Officer at Stanbic Bank Uganda, said the initiative aligns with the bank’s broader mission to empower communities through education and technology.
“This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and Stanbic’s strategic intent to uplift women, youth, and farmers by empowering communities with the tools they need to thrive in a modern economy,” Sekaziga said.
Peter Muyeke, Head Teacher of Petta Community Secondary School, praised the bank for the timely intervention, noting that the new computers would revolutionize the school’s teaching and learning environment.
“For years, we’ve been managing with only 10 to 15 computers for over 2,000 students. These new computers will transform both teaching and learning experiences. The students, teachers, and the entire community are beneficiaries. We are truly grateful to Stanbic Bank,” Muyeke said.
Tororo District Education Officer, Alfred Odoi, commended Stanbic Bank for complementing government efforts in promoting ICT education.
“While government interventions are ongoing, the demand for educational facilities continues to grow faster than supply. That’s why Stanbic’s support has come at exactly the right time. I commend Stanbic for going beyond profit-making to touch the lives of ordinary people through meaningful community initiatives,” Odoi said, urging the school to make full use of the donated equipment.
Founded in 2007 following the introduction of Universal Secondary Education, Petta Community Secondary School was the first in Petta Sub-county and has since grown into one of the largest schools in the area. Despite infrastructural challenges, the school continues to post impressive academic results, and with this new ICT boost, it hopes to raise the bar even higher.
Stanbic Bank’s donation reaffirms its long-term investment in Uganda’s education sector and its belief that technology-driven learning is key to empowering the next generation and driving sustainable national growth.
