Africa-Press – Uganda. The vandalism of road furniture including road signs, guardrails and streetlights among others has not only caused heavy financial losses to government but also put the safety of road users at risk.

Officials warn that such acts undermine government’s investment in road infrastructure and contribute to an increase in accidents.

Enforcement operations, both direct and covert, are ongoing across the country to dismantle criminal networks involved in the vice. Authorities say several suspects have been arrested and are being prosecuted to send a strong message of deterrence.

In post on the ministry of works X account, the ministry asserted that government incurs losses caused by vandalism of critical assets.

The facilities are not only expensive to replace but are also vital for road safety and traffic flow.

The ministry of works and security agencies have stepped up collaboration to ensure culprits are brought to book. Communities are being urged to play their part by safeguarding public infrastructure.

In a statement on X, the ministry appealed to citizens to promptly report any cases of road infrastructure vandalism to the nearest police or local authorities for immediate action.

As Uganda continues to expand and modernise its road network, the challenge of vandalism remains a significant setback. Authorities say addressing it requires a joint effort between security agencies and the public to ensure road safety and preserve public resources.
