Africa-Press – Uganda. The 2025 Absa Pro-Am Tournament of the Uganda Golf Open concluded in style at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club, with standout performances from some of the country’s top golfers. Vincent Byamukama emerged victorious, followed closely by Joshua Seale and Tatenda Makunde, rounding off the top three.
The trio shared a total prize pool of Shs 10 million, a notable increase from Shs 8 million awarded last year — a reflection of the growing prestige and competitiveness of the event.
Road to Magical Kenya Open
As part of the tournament’s extended impact, the top 10 golfers also secured highly sought-after slots to represent Uganda at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open Pro-Am. Sponsored fully by Absa Bank Uganda, the opportunity includes all-expenses-paid participation for five amateur and five professional golfers (subject to meeting professional qualification criteria). If any professional slots are unclaimed, they will be allocated to the next best-performing amateurs.
Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, David Wandera, Managing Director of Absa Bank Uganda, emphasized the bank’s commitment to developing local sports talent.
“We believe in the power of sports to unite communities and inspire individuals. By investing in events like this, we aim to encourage the spirit of healthy competition and provide a platform for local talent to thrive,” Wandera stated.
He added that Absa’s ongoing support for the Uganda Golf Open is aimed at elevating tournament standards, attracting top-tier players, and enhancing the experience for both players and fans.
The Pro-Am Tournament, now in its seventh year of Absa sponsorship, is a prestigious one-day event that pairs professional and amateur golfers. While professionals use it as a practice round ahead of the Professionals Open, amateurs benefit from rare exposure to high-level play and mentorship.
This year, Absa Bank Uganda committed Shs 300 million to the Uganda Golf Open. The contribution covered Shs 10 million in professional prizes and the costs associated with Uganda’s representation at the Magical Kenya Open.
Growing the Game
Since the inception of this partnership, 53 amateur golfers have benefited from the chance to compete at the Magical Kenya Open, gaining exposure to elite-level golf alongside DP World Tour professionals. This exposure has enhanced player competitiveness and fueled the growth of the sport in Uganda.
Beyond the Pro-Am, Absa has also sponsored other major golfing events, such as the Captain’s Bell, reinforcing its long-term dedication to strengthening Uganda’s golfing ecosystem.
The 2025 Pro-Am once again underscored the Uganda Golf Open’s status as one of the country’s premier sporting events, providing a crucial platform for emerging talent to shine — with Absa Bank Uganda playing a pivotal role in making that possible.
