Tororo Candidates’ Posters Targeted Amid 2026 Election Preparations

Africa-Press – Uganda. As the 2026 general elections approach, chaotic scenes are emerging in Tororo Municipality, where parliamentary candidates’ posters are being defaced in the town center.

Along the stretch from the Tororo Roundabout towards the Mbale–Tororo Road, posters belonging to independent candidate Shyam Tanna have been visibly torn, with entire images shredded, mainly targeting the candidate’s face. Posters hung on electric poles have been particularly affected.

Shyam suspects that political opponents are behind the acts, claiming they view him as a major threat and are attempting to frustrate his visibility.

“This act began shortly after I launched my campaigns, which drew over 8,000 voters. My opponents felt threatened, and from that time onward, I have witnessed continuous defacement,” said Shyam Tanna, Tororo Municipality candidate.

Although he has tried to replace some of the destroyed posters, Shyam says the effort has been costly and is calling for urgent security intervention.

“Making these posters is expensive. For weeks, we have been experiencing defacement and have had to replace them repeatedly. This has not been easy on our side,” he added.

Police have confirmed receiving several related complaints and say investigations are ongoing. Authorities warn that anyone found responsible will face legal consequences, describing the acts as criminal.

“Several candidates have registered cases with us, including the incumbent Member of Parliament Apollo Yeri Ofwono and now Shyam Tanna. We are monitoring these cases closely, and anyone found responsible will face the law. I also appeal to the public to desist from such acts,” said Moses Mugwe, Bukedi South Police spokesperson.

Defacement of candidates’ posters, often accompanied by violence, has been a recurring issue during election cycles in Tororo Municipality, with past incidents even resulting in loss of life. Security agencies insist they will not allow such incidents to escalate this time around.
