UCC Urges Ibanda to Support Tokigeza against Telecom Fraud

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has urged residents of Ibanda District to actively support the Tokigeza campaign, a nationwide drive to curb vandalism of telecommunication infrastructure and stem rising cases of fraud that continue to disrupt essential services.

Joseph Kizito, the Head of Consumer Affairs at UCC, said the campaign’s success depends on community vigilance and public cooperation.

“The Tokigeza campaign seeks to raise awareness among Ugandans to safeguard telecom infrastructure and reduce fraud cases,” Kizito told.

“Fraudsters often take advantage of vandalized masts to exploit unsuspecting people. That’s why we are urging everyone to be watchful and report any suspicious activity around these installations.”

He stressed that residents serve as the first line of defense in protecting infrastructure, urging them to always demand proper identification from anyone tampering with telecom masts or cables.

According to UCC, telecom operators recorded more than 820 cases of cable vandalism, 283 fuel thefts, and 90 battery thefts between 2022 and 2024.

Such incidents have caused costly disruptions in districts including Sheema, Kaliro, and Masaka, affecting healthcare, security, and other vital services.

UCC classifies vandalism as economic sabotage and warns that offenders face harsh penalties.

“Vandalism is a serious crime. Sections 82, 84(1)(d), 237, and 244 of the Penal Code Act prescribe penalties of up to 10 years in prison for repeat offenders,” Kizito said.

The Tokigeza campaign, launched in May 2025, is part of UCC’s broader strategy to enlist public involvement in protecting telecom assets and combating fraud, thereby safeguarding uninterrupted communication services across Uganda.
