Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda Christian University (UCU) has etched its name in the history books by becoming the first African university to reach the semifinals of the FISU 3×3 Basketball World Cup, culminating in a remarkable bronze medal victory at the 2025 tournament in Brazil.

The UCU Lady Canons delivered an extraordinary performance throughout the competition, showcasing the talent and resilience of African university basketball on the global stage.

Their semifinal qualification was a historic first for any African university, and they went a step further by securing a podium finish, demonstrating that African teams can compete with the world’s best.

In the third-place playoff, UCU edged out China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology in a thrilling 18-15 victory to claim the bronze medal.

The win capped off a memorable tournament for the Lady Canons, who have been powered by stellar performances from Tracy Namugosa, Sheila Lamunu, Martina Anyango, and Sylvia Nantongo.

The team’s historic run to the semifinals was propelled by a strong quarterfinal performance against the University of Valencia (Spain), where Namugosa scored 7 points and Lamunu added 6 to secure a 20-16 victory. This victory ensured UCU’s place in the semifinals and marked a milestone achievement in African university sports history.

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) hailed the Lady Canons’ performance, celebrating UCU as “#FASU3X3 Champions & #FISU3X3 Bronze Medalists”.

FASU praised the team for elevating African university basketball, noting that “UCU raised the African University Sports Basketball bar high by becoming the first ever African University to make it to the semi-finals of #FISU3X3.”

Tracy Namugosa’s outstanding contributions were recognized with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award of the 2025 FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball, further highlighting the calibre of talent on the UCU squad.

The bronze medal represents one of Uganda’s and Africa’s most significant achievements in global university sports, cementing UCU’s status as an emerging powerhouse in 3×3 basketball.

Their success is expected to inspire a new generation of university athletes across the continent and elevate the profile of African teams on the international stage.
