Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda and China have reaffirmed their economic partnership as a high-level delegation of Chinese investors visits Uganda to explore opportunities in key sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure.

The visit, facilitated by the Embassy of Uganda in Beijing under Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, is part of a broader effort to position Uganda as a leading investment destination in Africa.

The initiative follows the annual ambassadors’ retreat held in Gulu, where Uganda’s envoys committed to promoting trade and investment in line with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s vision of industrial transformation and economic modernization.

Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Peter Muramira, representing the Director General of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), outlined Uganda’s priority investment sectors.

He emphasized emerging opportunities in renewable energy, particularly bamboo-based energy solutions, and highlighted government-backed incentives in industrial park development, oil and gas, and vocational training to build a skilled workforce.

While acknowledging the ongoing trade imbalance with China, Mr. Muramira pointed to a 127% surge in Uganda’s exports to China between February 2024 and February 2025 as evidence of improving trade dynamics and growing market access for Ugandan goods.

The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Diao Chunhe, Chairman of the Alliance of Chinese Business in Africa for Social Responsibilities. Mr. Diao praised Uganda’s stable business environment and noted its recent recognition as the “Best Investment Destination in Africa 2024”. He cited the country’s record foreign direct investment inflow of $3.034 billion in the last fiscal year as a testament to investor confidence.

Highlighting successful bilateral projects such as the Karuma Hydropower Plant, Buikwe Water Supply Project, and national ICT backbone infrastructure, Mr. Diao emphasized the need for sustainable, socially responsible partnerships moving forward.

Mr. Wang Jianxun, Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, lauded the progress of China-Uganda relations, which date back to 1962.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting responsible Chinese enterprises in Uganda and promoting projects aligned with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the Fourth National Development Plan, which prioritize agriculture, digital innovation, and industrialization.

Officials from both countries underscored the importance of cooperation that delivers tangible benefits, including job creation, technology transfer, and inclusive economic growth.

The visit marks a renewed chapter in Uganda-China relations, aimed at deepening investment ties and advancing shared development goals.
